Is the World Persecuting the Church, or the Whore?

Persecution in America is tame, to say the least. I’m inclined to say it’s not persecution at all! Our cries for persecution sound like a pansy freaking out because of a sore hangnail. Oh, no, they ticketed our cars when we were double-parked for a church small group! Ahhh, persecution in America! They’re making a bakery sell cakes to a gay couple! Really? Is this persecution?

The Bible describes true persecution. Interestingly, it will not be because of too many people parked on a street, or some stand against selling cake to certain people. And it doesn’t necessarily come from the Government, either.

“…and you will be beaten in the synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them.”Mark 13:9

Beaten in the synagogues! It’s always important to remember the context in which this was written. To the Israelite/Jewish audience of Peter’s gospel (written by Mark), the synagogue would be like church to an American audience. Or, cathedral might be to a person in Europe.

What stands out to me is that the religious system will work with the governors and kings. This isn’t really that surprising. After all, the Jewish Sanhedrin and the Scribes and Pharisees had great power from Rome because they could keep people in line with their religion. This is one of the biggest indictments against faith is that “religion” is the opiate of the people. Of course, there’s a difference between true religion and the false, human religion. It is the latter that is the opiate of the masses (pun not entirely intended).

The so-called religious leaders will persecute the true congregation of Christ. We will be beaten and humiliated in the church. We will be sent before governors and kings (like Paul) in chains. And this brutal treatment will be for the purpose of being witnesses for Jesus’ sake! We will take part in His sufferings. Just like Jesus was baptised with water in identification with us, we will be baptised in persecution in identification with Him!

If you don’t like that idea, if you prefer the happy life of abundance free of care or suffering … true Christianity is not your thing. Consider this your wake-up call that you have now counted the cost and should discontinue your building plans.

Unfortunately, what we call The Church is largely comprised of false Christians who are proclaiming this false gospel of health and wealth. These are waterless clouds who have a form of godliness, but deny God’s power or authority. They appear, on the surface, to be good teachers … but they eventually reveal that they are actually only “dwellers of the earth” who are nothing more than Johns for the great whore from Revelation.

“Come and I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters, with whom the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality, and with the wine of whose sexual immorality the dwellers on the earth have become drunk.” Rev. 17:1-2

“The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality.” Rev. 17:4

“And I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.” Rev. 17:6

In Revelation 17 we meet this gaudy woman, jeweled and drunk. We have so-called Christians today who even say that we should be “drunk in the spirit.” These pagans go about stumbling and … looking drunk. They get themselves in an altered state, paw at each other, sway to music, liken the Holy Spirit to a woman (which comes from Kabbala mysticism), compare love with Christ to sexual intercourse … Yeah, it’s weird and creepy.

More than that, it’s an abomination before God. This false form of Christianity is vile.

Man does not like the religion of the cross, of faith, of self-denial, and each age has witnessed some false system from which all these objectionable elements are eliminated. –F.B. Meyer

How can we tell these false Christians from the true congregation of Christ? Well, they will downplay God and emphasise the beat (to borrow some lyrics from a Newsboys song).

As my mentor (long passed on to Glory) F.B. Meyer says, they won’t like the cross or self-denial. I mentioned in my blog about the “I Am Second” videos, from the Whosoevers, that they are displaying a false gospel because they never mention that they are sinners before a holy God and they deserve His wrath. No, instead God is a band-aid for their troubled lives. God is there to love on them when they’ve hit rock bottom.

As with most heresy, there’s an element of truth there. God certainly does call “all who are weary” and He certainly will “give them rest.” But that doesn’t happen to people who are weary because of their consequences! Rather, we need to be weary because of our sinfulness and our total inability to stand before a Holy, Righteous, Just and frighteningly Loving God!

Quick aside: Why did I say ‘frighteningly loving?’ Because God’s love is pure and strong and will not allow any impurity to be mixed with what He loves. The father and mother who love their child will not allow any of the cancer to remain … So, God’s Love is frightening because it will never say “close enough.” We can depend on God’s love. But if you love the world, His love will be the driving force that will destroy you with the sin you’ve chosen to enjoy.

The false chuch elevates pastors and elders, priests and popes … it creates rituals and warns about magic words or mystical numbers, etc. The pomp and ceremony is the means of grace, they say. Being recognized by those in “authority” is the true stamp of your salvation. They think they’ve wrestled the keys of the Kingdom from Christ.

But they’re just a fancy-dressed prostitute. And here’s the fun part:

“… they and the beast will hate the prostitute. They will make her desolate and naked, and devour her flesh and burn her up with fire, for God has put it into their hearts to carry out his purpose by being of one mind and handing over their royal power to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled.” Rev. 17:16-17

The kings of the earth actually hate the false church. And they will desolate her, devouring her flesh, burning her with fire. And they’ll be doing this because God has put it in their heart to do so.

This is the persecution of the false church. It’s interesting to see this because there will come a time when these false teachers who have downplayed God and emphasized the beat will cry out because of how the world has turned on them. They’ll claim they are being persecuted for Christ, no doubt. They will claim, “Lord, Lord!”

But, they are the workers of lawlessness who will be sent to where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. Their torment will rise up for eternity in the very presence of Jesus Christ whom they have profaned.

Be sure to differentiate whether you’re being persecuted as a Christian or as a member of the great whore.

  1. The world and the whore have an uneasy reliance, there are times that the whore is using the world and other times that the world is using the whore. I don’t see it so much as a persecution as the ebb and flow of the ride that the whore is taking on the beast.

In the end the whore will be cast off completely so she will have served her purpose, but as it sits now the ride goes on, and the people of God often suffer for it. There are places where the world has seemingly already cast off the whore where the world directly persecutes God’s people, but in other places where the ride continues or she has another face (Islam etc) the whore herself is used to persecute God’s people.
