I keep seeing these ads with Jerry Jenkins and others shamelessly hawking themselves as having the “secret” to writing earth-shattering books of great, life-changing importance.

The problem is that Jerry Jenkins has written cheesy “end-times” “apocalypse” thrillers that have a rather loose grip on prose, character, plot or … theology.

But, It got me thinking, what if the actual heroes of the Bible did a similar thing … Let’s take a look at John The Baptist:

When you’re a forerunner for Christ, the message means everything to you—but you’re scared it won’t be good enough. What if you’re not ready yet?

Let me tell you—as the cousin of Jesus (I actually met him before we were born!), I’ve made my share of mistakes. But through trial and error, I’ve discovered 8 crucial secrets to crafting a message that resonates with people of all walks of life.

I called the Pharisees as a ‘brood of vipers,’ and asked them who warned them to flee the wrath to come. Then, I got to baptize the Son of God.

This message of repentance spread country-wide on a scale I had only dreamed of before.

Doesn’t look too legit, does it?

Let’s try Moses:

When you’re leading God’s people out of Egypt, your message means everything to you—but you’re scared it won’t be good enough. What if you’re not ready yet?

Let me tell you—as the leader of millions of Israelites (90% of them grumbling!), I’ve made my share of mistakes. But through trial and error, I’ve discovered 8 crucial secrets to being humble and meek, a message that resonates with readers.

I wrote the first five books of the Bible, selling over 200 million copies and counting.

The message of those books spread worldwide on a scale I had only dreamed of before.

Still seems a bit … off, doesn’t it?

I’m gonna go out on a limb and just say that Christians shouldn’t be about building a name for themselves *cough*Babel *cough*. Could you picture a sign that says, John The Baptist Ministries with a camel-hair decked guy smiling with bugs between his teeth and honey on his beard? That’s an image!

Of course not! This was a man who said, “He must increase, but I must decrease.”  (John 3:30).

The defining character trait of Moses was his meekness and humility (which pointed toward the character of Jesus).

In fact, Jesus told people not to tell everyone about His miracles, not “click here to learn my 8 secrets!”

We should always be concerned with the glory of our Lord, not the elevation of our brand or our name.
